If you are looking for a way to work off some of the calories from Thanksgiving, there may be an opportunity to shovel snow very soon.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory beginning at 7 a.m. Sunday for several counties in the northern part of the state. A two-part storm system that is causing travel headaches in the Midwest is making its way to New Jersey, with the first flakes scheduled to begin Sunday in the northern part of the state.
The storm could become a significant problem for people headed back home from the Thanksgiving holiday. The Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest travel days of the year.
The National Weather Service said the weather event is a complex setup comprised of a Great Lakes storm that will give way to a coastal low-pressure development on Sunday evening.
A light wintry mix will begin along the I-95 corridor and areas west of the interstate, and should change to snow late Sunday night and into Monday. The snowfall may range from moderate to heavy at times.
Areas in and around Sussex could see snowfall amounts of up to 9 inches. Morristown could see 6 inches of snow, with Belvedere and New Brunswick forecasted to see up to 3 inches.
The central and southern parts of the state will see mostly rain on Sunday, with a later changeover to snow on Monday. Trenton is forecasted to receive up to 3 inches of snow. Toms River is expected to receive up to 2 inches of snow, with Medford expected to receive up to an inch.
Areas further south such as Vineland, and Atlantic City will receive less than an inch of snow.
The weather agency said many of the snowfall totals are subject to change, depending upon the timing of the transition from rain, freezing rain and sleet to snow.
