NASA news: The space agency just shared the most breathtaking picture of Earth from space - Express.co.uk

's photo was taken some 250 miles (402km) above the planet’s surface in low Earth orbit (LEO). The space picture shows the Sun’s golden glow falling over the island nation of Indonesia southeast Asia. The International Space Station orbits the planet at an incredible 17,500mph an hour. At these speeds, the orbital laboratory completes an orbit of the Earth roughly every 90 minutes.

The US agency said: “Imagine having a view like this every day.

“The Sun’s glint beams off the Celebes Sea in southeast Asia as the ISS flies 255 miles above Indonesia.

“Astronauts aboard the space station take advantage of importunes to make Earth science observations that help us better understand our dynamic planet.”

On Twitter, the space agency also described the ISS view as a “peaceful scene”.

NASA said: “The space station has the volume of a five-bedroom house or two Boeing 747 jetliners.

“It is able to support a crew of six people, plus visitors.

“On Earth, the space station would weigh almost a million pounds.

“Measured from the edges of its solar arrays, the station covers the area of a football field including the end zones.

“It includes laboratory modules from the United States, Russia, Japan and Europe.”

Quick facts about the International Space Station:

1. The space station’s solar array has the same wingspan of an Airbus A380.

2. The ISS orbits the planet at a speed of around five miles per second.

3. As of March 21, 2019, 230 individuals from 18 countries have visited the space station.

4. Each astronaut pends two hours a day working out to combat the effects of muscle and bone loss in space.
