Pelosi: Democrats will take up measure to ban foreign opposition research - Washington Examiner

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said the House would take up legislation that would require candidates to report foreign offers of opposition research to the FBI.

Pelosi made the announcement in response to President Trump’s ABC News interview about accepting such research, which she called “appalling” and an indication “the president does not know right from wrong.”

Trump told ABC that he would accept foreign opposition research unless he determined something was wrong.

“There is a law that you cannot accept contributions and that includes in-kind from a foreign government,” Pelosi said. “But if it needs more clarity than we will go to the ‘duty to report.’ Not only that you don’t accept it, but you report it to the FBI.”

Pelosi called such research “an invitation of of our democracy” and said Democrats want to make it illegal.

“We want to make sure it has more clarity and a responsibility to report.”

Pelosi did not agree with some Democrats who believe Trump’s latest comments demand an impeachment inquiry. Instead, she said Democrats will continue investigating Trump with subpoenas they will seek to enforce in federal court.

“We want to have a methodical approach to the path we are on and this will be included in that,” Pelosi said.
