Once in every two to three years, the sun, the Earth, and the moon align into a straight line creating the phenomenon known as the blood moon. The Liberty Science center is inviting visitors to celebrate the coming of the blood moon on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 6 p.m.
While the LSC’s exhibitions will be open all day, the festivities for the blood moon won’t begin until 6 p.m. Visitors are free to join in at any time during the day and night. The event will run until 1 a.m.
Telescopes will be on the lawn for guests to enjoy the lunar eclipse. Educators that will answer any questions about this natural occurrence. An eclipse-themed show will also take place in the Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium with shows at 6:20, 7:10, 7:50, 8:30, 9:10, 9:50, and 10:30 p.m. A Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon laser show will follow the show at 11:10 p.m. Lunar themed cocktails will also be served.
The moon can only take on it’s blood red appearance during the occurrence of a total lunar eclipse, which is when the Earth, its sun, and moon are aligned in a straight line, causing the Earth to block direct sunlight from reaching the moons surface.
The moon is still visible, but when the sunlight passes through the Earth, the light’s color become filtered, making the wavelengths appear red and orange as they pass through the atmosphere and illuminate the moon. The last time an eclipse had this effect on the moon was in 2015.
Other activities for the night include the make-your-own crater adventure, face painting, and the astronaut glove challenge where participants attempt to perform simple tasks while wearing an astronauts glove.
The LCS’s Lunar Mania event is open to all ages.
Tickets can be purchased at lsc.org. The Liberty Science Center is located at 222 Jersey City Blvd., Jersey City.
