LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- If you are to look up in the northern sky Sunday night, you could see a something that we haven't seen in almost 20 years - a comet passing by.
46P/Wirtanen makes its closest appearance to Earth Sunday, but you can still see it for the next few weeks if conditions are right.
Right now, viewing in our area is expected to be OK. Clouds will gradually start to clear out overnight. For the best viewing, get away from the city lights.
The comet will appear as fuzzy green dot in the sky. (This is one of the reason why it get's it's nickname the Christmas Comet, the other is the time of the year that it will be visible.)
Don't expect to see a tail with this comet, many years of passing by the sun has melted it's ice tail.
Here's an article, written about a month ago from the fine folks at space.com on more of what you can expect from the comet.
