Great white shark reportedly spotted in Buzzards Bay on Sunday

An expert from the New England Aquarium confirmed that a creature that was apparently caught on camera lurking off Cape Cod on Sunday is a great white shark.

A father and son spotted the apex predator in Buzzards Bay while enjoying their Sunday afternoon in a boat, according to WCVB.

David and Paul Cody were about 100 yards away from Penikese Island when the shark appeared, WCVB reported. Instead of swimming away, the shark swam right up to their boat.

“It came over to us, and all of a sudden it came right under the boat,” the elder Cody, David, told WCVB. “It was big. It looked big to us.”

An aquarium expert reviewed cell phone footage of the encounter and confirmed that it was a great white shark, aquarium spokeswoman Diana McCloy told the Globe Sunday night.

The Codys could not be reached for comment on Sunday night.

There have been several shark sightings in the Cape Cod area this summer, leading to beach closures and other close encounters. A 61-year-old man was also attacked by a shark near Long Nook Beach in Truro earlier this month, suffering puncture wounds to his hip area.
