Looking like a seagoing Dr. Octopus, SpaceX's Mr. Steven has added four longer, articulated arms

A strange-looking ship that looks like a giant upside-down spider has crept into the waters off San Pedro again, the latest indication that SpaceX was about to give its nose-cone catching craft another shot.

Meet Mr. Steven. He’s not a high-tech villain from the Marvel universe, he’s a cost-saving craft born from the mind of Elon Musk’s ever-inventive company.

The bizarre 205-foot vessel located at the aerospace company’s berth in the Port of Los Angeles was spotted recently looking about four times more stout then its first iteration earlier this year.

Like a certain character out of Spiderman comics, Mr. Steven now boasts four articulated arms reaching upward like a claw.

The ship is designed to extend a net capable of catching SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket nose-cones, or fairings, as they are guided back toward earth.

By reusing the fairings, SpaceX can save costs. Each module is worth an estimated $6 million,

Mr. Steven was unsuccessful in its attempt in May with SpaceX founder and CEO Musk tweeting shortly after the company would be “extending the net area by a factor of 4.”

A representative for SpaceX did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
