Blood Moon 2018: When is the Blood Moon in July? Is it visible in the UK and USA?

The blood moon 2018 will be the second chance skywatchers have this year to see the rare lunar event.

January’s super blue blood moon was the last time viewers were treated to the rare sight, which combined a super moon, blood moon and blue moon.

While the stunning view was visible in the USA, including Alaska and Hawaii, the UK missed out on the full occasion.

Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America will all get their turn this year as the July blood moon graces the skies.

When is the blood moon visible over the UK and USA?

The UK will be treated to the blood moon on July 27 for a total of 103 minutes as the moon progresses directly though the earth's shadow.

However, stateside space fans will face disappointment as the blood moon will not reach them.

Bruce McClure, celestial expert, said: “This lunar eclipse is primarily visible from the world’s Eastern Hemisphere – Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand."

The only place across the Atlantic set to see the blood moon will be South America, which will catch the last glimpse of the event.

The blood moon is the result of a Lunar Eclipse, which is when the earth sits in between the sun and moon.

As a result, the moon sits in the earth’s shadow and the sun casts a strange red light on it.

This is because the sunlight is filtered through the earth’s atmosphere, which filters out certain colour in a phenomenon known as Rayleigh scattering.

The event this year will also see Mars at its closest to the earth in 15 years and will mark the first time since 2003 that the red planet will be visible to the naked eye.

When is the next blood moon in the USA?

The next available eclipse for the USA will occur next year on January 21.

Unlike the super blue blood moon early this year, next year’s blood moon will not be quite as spectacular.

The event will however be a super blood moon, with the moon being a fraction bigger than normal as it passes closer to the earth.

Next year’s eclipse will be visible coast-to-coast in the US, compared to the west-coast exclusive January eclipse.
